The Poetry of
Jack Scott

Hardly Haiku III

Passion of my youth,
what loveless ways have made you
asthma of old age?

116

A hand breaking in
a glove, is love; fist doubled
up at fate, is hate.

121

Feather and fire is love’s
first touch; eye’s touch is feather;
fingers spread the fire.

122

Afraid of the dark
I bolted, and ran headlong
into blinding light.

128

Penny here, dime there saved,
nest egg laid; old age is when
life presents its bill.

132

Your garden is neat.
How orderly are your grounds.
Your house is a sty.

139

Much too large for her,
what’s left of togetherness,
much too small for me.

140

Many a marriage
outlives a love; how many
loves outlast marriage?

142

Light years are dark years
in the grave; brief light-moments
hold me long time’s slave.

150

Lovely weather, this
first day; another spring is
now a year away.
